How can we use Generative AI (GenAI) tools in a way that is consistent with our higher ethical and environmental values? Is it even possible, with so many possible harms? This presentation explores these questions both generally and in relation to our learning and teaching. Presenters provide an overview of how these “prediction machines” work, and how their output reflects the biases of their training data. The demand for electricity and water resources by the massive data centers required to run these systems is also considered, as is the problem of GenAI reproducing Indigenous knowledge. The presentation also addresses issues of copyright, surveillance, and especially AI detection in our work as educators. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the issues surrounding Generative AI and the resources available to support its informed use. 

Presenters:

Ian Linkletter is an Emerging Technology and Open Education Librarian with BCIT Library. He provides guidance to faculty in the perils of technology such as Generative AI. He has extensive experience in educational technology and is Vice-Chair of BCIT’s Educational Technology and Learning Design Committee (ETLDC).

Cindy has been at BCIT Library since 2014. She is currently Archivist, Indigenous Support Librarian, and Institutional Repository Librarian. Cindy is a graduate of the University of British Columbia’s Master of Archival Studies and Master of Library and Information Studies programs (2011).. 

Jeff Verbeem has been at BCIT Library since 2014. He is currently a liaison to business and trades programs.  He has extensive teaching experience and is working to stay current on educational technology.
